Practice Philosophy

Dr. Fred Buttell is a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) and a Board Approved Clinical Supervisor (BACS). He has been an LCSW since 1995 and moved to New Orleans in 2002. He provides psychotherapy that is informed by both Positive Psychology and Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy. His therapeutic work is a unique blend of formal studies in psychology, social work, women’s studies, and sociology, which support both short term practical problem solving as well as long term personal growth. His approach is broadly humanistic, client centered and wellness oriented. His philosophy is that change occurs as a result of a therapeutic relationship in which clients feel understood and supported in developing a compassionate relationship with themselves. This collaborative approach of reflection and inner listening lets clients be in control of their own experience and teaches them how to develop this lifelong skill for use anytime. Dr. Buttell received both his MSW and PhD from the University of Alabama. For the last 22 years, Dr. Buttell has been a full-time faculty member at the Tulane University School of Social Work. He has published dozens of peer-reviewed articles on the topics of Intimate Partner Violence, Attachment Theory, Moral Development, and counseling outcomes. He has broad training and clinical experience in many psychotherapy models and incorporates aspects of several different models in his approach. Generally speaking, he helps people understand problems in the way they think about themselves (intrapersonal) and in the ways they deal with others (interpersonal) and then works with them to identify solutions and implement them into their lives.
